Church Administrator

Joel Young

Joel Young was raised in a Christian home and regularly attended church.  At the age of nine he became concerned about dying and was counseled by his parents and his piano teacher.  Soon afterward, his church had a revival and Joel felt the Spirit’s leadership to respond.  He went forward and told the pastor that “it was the best sermon I had ever heard.”  Although the pastor only thanked him and sent him back to his seat, Joel believes he was saved that night because he knew the plan of salvation and had responded in repentance and faith in Christ.  Two years later another pastor counseled with him and Joel was sure he had already received Jesus as his Savior.  He made his decision public the following year when he was baptized at the age of 12.

Joel attended Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.  He completed a double major in Accounting and Management.  He earned a Master of Divinity in Christian Education from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.  He also earned a Master of Business Administration and Master of Social Administration from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a Certified Public Accountant in the states of Tennessee and North Carolina.

Joel has a wealth of experience in both secular and church occupations.  He served as the Chief Financial Officer of Yancey Sand & Gravel Company in Burnsville, N.C. from 1978-1993.  Joel grew up in Pine Branch Baptist Church in Spruce Pine, NC, where he served many roles including Sunday School Director and Music Director.  He was very active in the Mitchell County Baptist Association where he served as Brotherhood Director, leading both home and foreign mission trips, and as a member of the Budget and Finance Committee.  He also served the North Carolina Baptist State Convention on various committees.  He served Highview Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky from 1993 – 1997, where he produced a video promotional production and coordinated a ministry to seminary students.  It was here that Joel was ordained as a deacon.  He interned with the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tennessee in 1996 in developing the “FAITH” evangelism strategy.   In 1997, following a lifelong love for missions, the Young Family answered God’s call and moved to Hong Kong, China for Joel to become Business Manager for the IMB missionaries and also helped Clearwater Bay International Baptist Mission become a church.  After the mission term ended in 1999, the Young family moved back to the States and Joel became the Church Administrator for Green Valley Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.  Joel Young was called to First Baptist Church in Morristown as Business Administrator and Staff Coordinator in June of 2005.

Joel’s philosophy of ministry is biblically based.  Our God is a God of order; He created order out of confusion and He has specific plans for us.  This is found in Jeremiah 29:11.   When some remark that the church is being run like a business, Joel’s reply is that even Jesus said He was doing His “Father’s business”.  Likewise, we as a church should also be about our Father’s business – the business of ministry of administration as we use Godly plans and order to fulfill the ministry of the church, leading to thanksgiving unto God.

Joel and Connie Young were married in 1985 in Taylorsville, Kentucky.  They are the proud parents of three daughters, Allison, Meredith and Lauren.  After being a homemaker and intermittent homeschool teacher during her girl's early years, Connie works as an LPN for a Non-Profit in the Morristown area.  Allison is a graduate of Carson Newman College in Elementary Education.  Meredith is a college student at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia studying accounting and serves as a Prayer Leader.  Lauren is a student at East High School in Morristown.  Joel spends free time working on and with computers and technology, which has been a hobby since learning the inner workings of computers from his Mission Administrator, Larry Ingram, in Hong Kong.
